Currently spending around 10 - 11 hours in the pool each week which is great for technique and fitness but we have discovered the downside of 'swimmers ear' or to use it's medical name Otitis Externa. This is a condition that affects many swimmers as it can be caused by excess water in the ear which obviously is difficult to dry out when so much time is spent in the water. It can also be caught through fungal or bacterial infections.
My daughter experienced pain in her ear which felt itchy and I often used to see her pulling on her earlobe to try and help with the pain and tenderness. Her earlobe would redden and she would be left sometimes with a slight loss in hearing (no she was not just ignoring me!)
When I heard about EarDoc I knew this was a product that I should try out. Here is a short video of my pre-teen trying out her new EarDoc after swimming.
The EarDoc was very simple to use. This lightweight, battery powered product transmits waves of vibration to the back of the ear when placed against it. These vibrations reach the middle ear through the vibration travelling through the bone which in turn opens the Eustachian Tube. This encourages the fluids to drain away and the pressure of the trapped and excess water is decreased - pain then subsides. The strength of the waves is easily controlled by moving a sliding button on the side of the unit. It is non-invasive and is like a tickling on the area and causes no discomfort in use.
Not only did it ease the pain my pre-teen was getting but on a practical side it was light and easy to transport in her swimming kit bag for quick and easy use. I do think a child of toddler age onwards could use this product although children under the age of 6 should only use the EarDoc under adult supervision.
The EarDoc is also suitable for air travellers (where cabin pressure affects the middle ear), Otitis Media, ear infections - all this from a small but clever invention.
