Red Toolbox - more than just DIY for kids

I first saw the Red Toolbox range at the Christmas in July event I attended and I knew it was something my children would love to get involved in.

The Red Toolbox range is an introduction to DIY and woodworking that is specifically designed for children to work alongside an adult.  The tools are child sized and designed for smaller hands but still work as well as your parents.  There are a selection of woodwork projects to suit all skills and a large selection of ages as well as sets that just include tools.

Real tools but designed for children
We were sent the Classic Toolbox and the Jewellery Case to have a go at and the kids got stuck in.  They loved the fact that the tools were 'just for them' and that they were able to actually use them instead of being told to put them down as we would have done with the adult sized versions.  The kits included all the wood required to make each project but did not include some tools that were necessary so please read the packaging to see if any additional tools are required prior to buying or starting the project.

The kits contained full instructions that were clear enough for the children or adult helper to read which I found really helpful.  This meant that the children were involved in all stages of the project and lowered the frustration of waiting for an adult to explain each stage.

Easy to read instructions

Although an adult is still required to do some of the DIY such as drilling (if the kit requires it) these kits are great to do together although it was hard to hold back and not take over sometimes!  One point we did find was that the screwdrivers in the set did not fit the screws properly which did make it a little frustrating for the children but this was rectified with a small modification and work commenced...

Gently does it!

Working together is half the fun
With an adults help the Classic Toolbox took about an hour to finish and my son was really pleased with his handywork:

Completed Toolbox and somewhere to store those great tools.
The Jewellery Box took slightly longer to complete but this was mainly because my daughter is older and wanted to do more of the project herself but wasn't that great at ensuring the nails went in straight!!

Both kits were well received by the children and provided a fun afternoon for both.  The Jewellery Box is classified as a Level 2 (Intermediate) project and the Classic Toolbox is Level 1 (Beginners) my children are aged 9 and 11 and I found that the Beginners was perfect for the 9 year old but the Level 2 was a challenge for my 11 year old daughter and more adult help was required than she wanted at that age.

The Red Toolbox range is now available in the UK and also has a Facebook page as well as on Twitter.  Well worth considering as a gift or just a project to complete together - also perfect as a rainy day activity.
