When my eldest son was young and I had just the one child I used to lovingly bake and decorate his birthdays cakes. With 4 children baking celebration cakes has become a lot less of an option and I can find the supermarkets very basic when it comes to choice. I hate lots of brightly coloured icing and dry sponge- no wonder children are usually excitable at parties!
Asda have a great new 3D cake in their party cakes selection. We recently tried the Cheeky Monkey cake with is just £15 ! I don't think I could make a cake that looked that good for that price, ok who am I kidding I couldn't make a cake that looked that good at any price!!
It was chocolate sponge filled with chocolate frosting and the monkeys fur was more gorgeous chocolate frosting (can you have too much?!) with chocolate curls - he even had edible decorations including his own banana.
The chocolate sponge was moist and the frosting was delicious although neither of my children or myself liked the taste of the edible decoration other than the banana which was argued over who was having that. The cake was eaten over 3 or so days as it serves 22 according to the box and it stayed fresh really quite well even in its own plastic box.
I will certainly be looking towards Asda again for celebration cakes, especially with those prices....
