Review - Born Free vented glass baby bottle

Sadly I was one of those mothers that was never very successful at breastfeeding.  I gave it my best shot but stopped after about 6 weeks when they stopped gaining weight as they had been. Once I moved on to bottle feeding I hit a problem with my 2nd child in that she would cry so much with colic that she would go purple in the face and bring her knees up so high to her poor aching tummy - it was agony for both of us.

I started each feed with 'anti colic drops' that smelled of orange - god how that smell stays with me. In the end I discovered 'anti colic' baby bottles and this helped the problem considerably.

I have always used this type of bottle but I recently tried Tala using the Born Free Feeding System which is designed to help minimize the symptoms of colic in bottle fed babies.  The two part venting system within their glass bottle is designed to help alleviate the vacuum build up within the bottle which can lead to trapped wind and colic. The vent allows a continuous flow of air through the bottle to stop negative pressure from building up, which can make feeding difficult.

I read the instructions carefully before use and washed and sterilised them. The bottles fitted into my standard electric steriliser. When making up Tala's feed I found the bottle easy to assemble and the instruction were easy to follow - always helpful! Tala seemed completely unaware of a change in his drinking vessel and settled down to a feed.

I was a little nervous at first of using a glass bottle as I am accustomed to plastic (BPA Free) bottles, and being a bit of a butter fingers at times I was sure I would end up dropping it. To help with this and to provide an easy grip there is a silicone sleeve that can be bought to put round the bottle itself.

Whilst feeding him you could actually see the small bubbles rising to the surface of the milk as he drank. This was the release of the negative pressure that can build up in non-vented bottles.  Born Free vented bottles help reduce colic and ear infections caused by this buildup. Tala drank happily and I soon forgot about my worries about glass bottles. Tala has not (touch wood) suffered from colic, whether this is because of using anti colic bottles or just by nature I will never know but I will certainly continue their use.
