Advent Calendars – To have or not to have?!

For children and adults, much of the fun of the Christmas is the anticipation leading up to the big day.

Choosing and hanging advent calendars in your house has captured the excitement of that anticipation for centuries, making each day before Christmas another reason to celebrate Christmas with a small chocolate or trinket.

The tradition of advent calendars began in Europe during the medieval era as part of the celebration of the four weeks leading up until Christmas Day. Advent was a season established by the church as a time of preparation and tradition. Christmas gifts might be exchanged on these anticipatory days as noblemen and villagers alike drew closer to December 25th.

In later centuries, this tradition was continued and expanded as each family would place a special advent calender in their homes to count the days of the holiday season. Some calendars might contain beautiful murals or carved figures of the Christmas story characters.  Others would be simple numbers marking each day, and contain a hidden prize or gift behind each number.

Advent calendars soon became a beloved tradition of many families leading up to Christmas.

Today, the advent calendar is still used. Each day on the calendar reveals a new chocolate surprise behind a door or picture of something related to Christmas. Children especially love the excitement of having a new door to open each day, making every morning almost a mini-Christmas celebration.

Traditional cardboard to craft advent calenders often become family heirlooms to be passed down from generation to generation, making it one of the most unique Christmas gifts available today.

So if you love chocolate Advent Calenders then they will love Hotel Chocolat Advent Calenders… There is even a calendar made for two to share so now more arguing over whos turn it is!! Here is ours...
