Board game fun and a 5 Second Rule

Recently we have been playing 5 Second Rule by University Games

The box describes it as 'The game of quick thinking and fast talking' and is suitable for 3 to 6 players with a recommended ages of 8 years to adult.

The object of the game is to correctly give three answers to the question on one of the 376 question cards (752 possible questions) before the timer catches you out.  Correct answers progress you along the 5 Second Rule game board and the winner is the first player to reach the finish and show just how much of a fast talker they are.

It's all about how fast you can talk!

The children loved the timer first and foremost!  It is a yellow plastic spiral tube that has ball bearings in, once turned over the balls twist to the bottom and it emits a funny sound in the process - very amusing and this was done many times before the game even got going - entertainment all on it's own.

My children are ages 10 and 12 and I noticed that they passed many questions on as they didn't feel confident that they could answer them at all and especially not in the 5 seconds the timer gives them.  For instance: Name 3 Islands off the Coast of Britain, not easy as an adult and tricky for those at the recommended age of 8+.

I think perhaps it would be better and fairer if there were questions for adults and separate ones for children as my children gave up and became bored quite quickly when they didn't know any answers.

I also found the cards themselves flimsy and bended easily when in use. Thicker or more robust cards would be required with many children!

I have to say I think the concept of the game is great but without more variation in the difficulty of the questions I wouldn't recommend for children under 12 unless they know a lot of facts or don't get disheartened quickly!
